COMMANDING OFFICER’s UPDATE

The Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada continued to lead the way in February and March 2023.  Our Cold Weather Operator (CWO) course concluded during Exercise Maroon Frost 2 in Burwash, with members being challenged by the course requirements including cold water immersion and preparing small game.  The Basic Mountain Operations Course being held in Trenton and Kingston Mills will be wrapping up at the end of March.  The QOR of C is the only Reserve unit capable of providing this course, thanks to Advanced Mountain Operations (AMO) Instructors MWO Burns, MWO Paton, WO Bridge, and Sgt Abate.  To top this off, we had 10 Paratroopers in Petawawa supporting the 3 RCR Jumpmaster Course; most were able to get at least 4 jumps in.

On March 8th, CWO Johnston, MWO Leader, WO Thomas, Sgt Crewe and I had the opportunity to attend Capt Kevin Junor’s presentation at the RCMI on the topic of the No. 2 Construction Battalion.  This was a unit formed for Black soldiers to serve during World War I, as many were not able to serve in other units due to discrimination.

The past month has also brought some unique recognition and important news for The Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada.  First, it was confirmed that the Regiment is Canada’s largest Army Reserve unit, and the most effective in terms of trained effective strength.  On March 3rd, it was announced that LCol Chris Boileau will be the next Commanding Officer, and MWO Justin Thorn will be the next Regimental Sergeant Major.  The Regiment will be in good hands with this Command Team.  It was also announced that our current RSM Jeff Johnston will be moving to the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry (RHLI), and I will be the Commanding Officer of the 3rd Canadian Ranger Patrol Group (3CRPG) in Borden.  We intend on holding the Change of Command and Appointment on September 17th, 2023.

On April 22nd and 23rd, the Regiment will be hosting the Rifles Council.  The Command Teams and members of all the Rifles Regiments in Canada will be in attendance.  It will consist of a shooting competition at Winona range, followed by a VIP reception and Dinner, and a visit to the Regimental Museum at Casa Loma.  The invitations for this event and the 1860 Club D-Day dinner on June 6th, 2023 will be sent out shortly.

Profile: Bugle Major MWO Emily M. Kenny, CD

We regularly profile a past member in our monthly communication.  In honour of International Women’s Day on March 8th, this month we present one of our female members: Bugle Major Emily M. Kenny.  This biography is from The QOR of C museum’s online resources and can be found here.

Master Warrant Officer Emily M. Kenny, CD grew up in Winnipeg where she began piano lessons as a youngster. She transferred her musical interest to the trumpet at the age of 12, eventually joining The Royal Winnipeg Rifles as a trumpet player in 2000. Shortly afterwards she was handed a bugle and told that this was part of the tradition of The Winnipeg Rifles and was advised to learn to play it well, advice she enthusiastically followed.

In 2003, as a bugler, she was a member of a combined Royal Winnipeg Rifles/Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada Band formed to play at the opening of the Juno Beach Centre and again in 2004 at the 60th anniversary of D-Day and in 2005 for the 60th anniversary of VE-Day. During those years she also had the honour of sounding Last Post and Reveille at numerous military funerals, including those of several Canadian soldiers who lost their lives in Afghanistan. In 2010, during the regiment’s 150th anniversary, she sounded those bugle calls at a Queen’s Own Rifles wreath-laying ceremony at the National War Memorial in Ottawa where members of the regiment stood guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

MWO Kenny completed studies in Fine Arts at the University of Manitoba then moved to Toronto in 2006 to pursue a career in Dental Technology. In keeping with Rifles traditions, she transferred to The Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada, where she found knowledge of military bugle marches and calls was useful in a regiment as strong in bugle traditions as the one where she had first served.

She was appointed Bugle Major in 2013, serving until 2017 when she returned to Winnipeg and rejoined the Royal Winnipeg Rifles as Band Sergeant Major.

Firearms Safety Course

Prof. Tim Richardson (formerly Vimy Platoon, Buffs Company early 1990’s) has become certified to teach the RCMP CFSC (Canadian Firearms Safety Course) and RCMP CRFSC (Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course) and is looking for members of the Regiment (past or present) who would be interested in these courses on weekends in February and March.

Successful completion of the CFSC course allows you to apply to receive a PAL (Possession Acquisition License) which will permit you to buy shotguns, rifles, ammunition, and other non-Restricted firearms.

While there may be some current legislation limiting handguns, the RCMP CRFSC is still allowed to be taught and people who do this weekend course will be eligible to obtain their R/PAL (Restricted Possession Acquisition License) which will be of benefit should you be presently, or in the future, applying for a job with any police service, or border services agency, or other federal or provincial organization, or business that requires you to have an ATC (Authorization to Carry for Lawful Employment).

$190 for the basic CFSC (2 days) which allows you to apply for the PAL

$150 for the Restricted CRFSC which allows you to apply for the R/PAL - IF you had done the basic CFSC within 30 days.

Contact Tim Richardson for more information - instructor@witiger.com, or tim.richardson@senecacollege.ca
